Japan Business and Asian Markets Study Abroad

Updated: Mar 7, 2020

Back at Broward College after taking all my accounting classes my teacher nominated me for the Japan Business and Asian Markets Study Abroad. This was a very select group of students that were chosen to go study abroad to Japan in order to research about global business models, management styles, Asian cultures and the application of these cultures to the Asian Markets and in relation to the American Ones.

In the Study Abroad we visited major corporations, investment banks, insurance companies and headquarters such as Toyota, Cup Noodles, The Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Tsukiji fish market and the Shinsaibashi-Sji Shopping Street.

Being a business major, I really truly appreciated this opportunity as it gave me the chance to really understand the major differences between the ways about doing business global, the traditions and customs of Asians.

Besides one of my personal favorite, the visit to Mount Fuji, something that I learned was how organization and punctuality is such a big thing in Japan. Being on time is late as showing up a couple of minutes early demonstrates that you organized your schedule in order to be there at the right time. Its not only a sign of respect but a courtesy to the business partner inviting you. Organization is a big thing also, as managing time is significantly important to Japanese as they value time very much. The greeting system is also very interesting as they never shake hands, instead, they vow at each other as a sign of respect. Being that most of the ways they act are based on respect, this can already tell you a lot about their culture. Lastly one more thing that I learned is that they are very mindful when doing business and closing a deal. If they say yes, there is no way of going back as their word is to be kept and honored. Together with this, if they are selling you a product or something physical, they like it for you to try it out first before closing a deal as customer satisfaction is also a must.

As Americans, we definitely have a lot to learn from the Japanese culture.

Arigatōgozaimashita!
